Abhishek Gulati Life Story

Abhishek "Abhi" Gulati passed away on October 29, 2025, at the age of 38. He is survived by his brother, Vivek, and his parents, Rakesh and Radha Gulati.

Abhi was born in Chennai, India, before moving to the United States as an infant. He spent most of his youth in Bloomington, Illinois, where he grew up surrounded by family, friends, and a vibrant community that nurtured his love of learning and creativity. From the very beginning, Abhi radiated joy, curiosity, and a quiet discipline. His mother fondly remembers him as a happy and disciplined child-playful and full of life, yet always thoughtful enough to put his toys back in their proper place. That same focus and care guided him throughout his life, both in his academic brilliance and his deep compassion for others.

Abhi's extraordinary aptitude for mathematics led to remarkable accomplishments. He was a finalist in the prestigious Intel Science Fair for his research in mathematics, a US Mathematical Olympiad qualifier, and a recipient of numerous state and national honors. In 2005, USA Today recognized him as one of the "20 Most Outstanding High School Students in America," celebrating not only his intellect but also his dedication, creativity, and character.

As a student, Abhi dreamed of becoming a mathematics professor-a goal born from his profound love of learning and teaching. Though life led him down a different path, he never abandoned that passion. Over the years, he worked as a tutor in math, science, and standardized test preparation; as a math teacher in the Chicago and Peoria school systems; and later as an instructor at a computer programming bootcamp. Through his teaching, Abhi touched countless lives-particularly within the Bloomington Indian community, where he taught and mentored so many of the children growing up there. Teaching was more than a profession to him; it was an expression of generosity, patience, and love. He found joy in sharing knowledge, whether guiding students through complex equations or explaining cutting-edge concepts like the "zero-knowledge proofs" he was studying near the end of his life. Even when his insights were far beyond others' understanding, he delighted in the exchange of ideas and the spark of curiosity in those around him.

Music was another of Abhi's lifelong loves-a constant companion through every chapter of his journey. He first discovered his passion through the violin, earning first-chair honors in the Bloomington Symphony as a high school student. In later years, he expanded his musical horizons, learning guitar and drums, and traveling to festivals and concerts across the country. No matter how heavy his burdens became, he never let go of his love for music. It was his refuge, his joy, and perhaps his truest form of peace.

Those who knew Abhi remember him as a kind and gentle soul-someone who wished well for everyone he met, who never harbored ill will, and who faced the world with empathy and grace even amid his own struggles. He had no malice in his heart, only compassion and a genuine desire to help others.

Though Abhi's journey was marked by challenges, his life stands as a testament to brilliance, kindness, and resilience. His family and friends will forever remember his deep intellect, boundless curiosity, and generous spirit.
