Carmen earned a B.S. in Music Therapy with a minor in Psychology from Loyola University of New Orleans in 1969. After an internship at Central Louisiana State Hospital in Pineville, Louisiana, she accepted her first position as a therapist at Fairview State Hospital in Costa Mesa, California, bringing inpatient Down's Syndrome children joy through music. In 1973, Carmen began teaching in Hollywood, Florida, public school system. In the evenings she took graduate classes at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, earning a master's degree in special education. She moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 1982, learned American Sign Language and taught visually impaired deaf children at the Perkins School for the Blind. Returning to Louisiana, she taught special needs and deaf students in the Lafayette Parish school system from January of 1985 until retirement in 2002.
Carmen loved to travel and circumnavigated the globe twice visiting every continent except Antarctica. She enjoyed dancing, music, and singing in her church choirs as well as accompanying them on her concert guitar. Upon returning to Lafayette, she became a member of St. Genevieve Catholic Church and subsequently joined the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Parish. In 2010, Carmen moved to Dallas, Texas and became a member of St. Rita's Catholic Community. She was active in the St. Rita chapter of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. She was a member of the Nancy Horton Davis Chapter of the National Association Daughters of the American Revolution and Chapter BM of P.E.O.
Her presence was a cherished gift to all those who knew her. Her kindness and warmth have left an indelible mark on all fortunate enough to have crossed paths with her. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her memory live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. in St. Rita Catholic Church, 12521 Inwood Road, Dallas, TX on August 24, 2024, with reception following in the church Commons from 1:30 - 3:00pm, and subsequently, interred at Calvary Cemetery, 355 Teurlings Drive in Lafayette, Louisiana." The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider donating in Carmen's name to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Rita Catholic Church, 1251 Inwood Road, Dallas, Texas 75344."
