Etna Elizabeth Smyth Sherick
October 26, 1935 - May 28, 2024
Etna Elizabeth Smyth Sherick went home to Jesus on May 28, 2024 at age 88.
Etna was born to James and Etna Smyth on October 26, 1935 in Birmingham, Pennsylvania.
Etna met her husband, John Sherick, at a church meeting and the two married on March 16, 1957. They went on to have four boys, Bill, Jim, Dan and Dick. The family was made complete with the constant presence of dogs and cats ranging up to 4 animals at one time. While the family bounced between Wilmington, Delaware and Dallas, Texas in their early years, they eventually made Dallas their permanent home the remainder of Etna's life.
In addition to being a dedicated and loving mother, Etna also loved caregiving for the elderly. For decades, she selflessly served by providing meals, transportation and company to elderly people in need. She also had ongoing relationships with elderly people she met while working as a checkout clerk at Kroger. Her loyal customers would stand in her line, even if it was the longest checkout line, just to talk to her.
Her love of the Lord was nurtured at Grace Bible Church, the family church home. She was also an avid fan of the Gaither Brothers music and actively followed preachers Dr. J. Dwight Pentecost and Tony Evans.
Etna was also famous for her cooking and baking. Her famous turkey meals were savored by family and friends. They were epic spreads that were not just saved for Thanksgiving but were served year round. Her hamburger cakes and pork chops with sauerkraut meals were close seconds. For the sweet tooth lovers, her chocolate chip cookies, chocolate sheet cake and spice cake were fan favorites. She made certain that no one ever left her house hungry!
Etna joins her parents, James and Etna, and her sisters, Ruth and Helen, and her husband, John, in Heaven. She is survived by her sister, Jean, her children Bill (Jennifer), Jim, Dan and Dick (Diane), and her grandchildren, Ellie and Drew.
