Life Story

In Loving Memory of Gabriel G. Sotelo

Gabriel Grando Sotelo, born on March 24, 1946, in the serene town of Marathon, Texas, was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He suddenly passed away on August17, 2023, leaving a void that echoes with great loss among his family and friends.

From his early days, Gabriel demonstrated a stubborn streak that would become a defining trait of his character. Born to Florencio and Francis Sotelo, he was nurtured in a close-knit family with his sisters Elsa and Alicia and brothers Oscar and Florencio, Jr. The Sotelo family later moved to Monahans, Texas, where Gabriel's journey unfolded. It was there that he met the love of his life, Rebecca Talavea. Their story began when Rebecca, at just 14 years old, saw the dashing 17-year-old Gabriel. Their connection was instant, and despite him having a girlfriend at the time, Rebecca's determination led them to marriage in 1967, when she was 18 and he was 21.

Family was the cornerstone of Gabriel's life, and he cherished every moment spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Known affectionately as "Popo," he adored his 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, showering them with unwavering love and wisdom. His strong-willed nature earned him the nickname "Chief" among his friends and family.

Gabriel's journey was one of remarkable versatility and skill. He was a true jack of all trades, excelling in careers that spanned bricklaying, plumbing, mechanics, and tire sales. His hands-on approach to life meant he rarely sought outside help; he could fix anything himself. This incredible skill was passed down to his children, grandchildren, and even friends' children who had the privilege of learning from him.

An avid fan of boxing, Gabriel admired the legendary Muhammad Ali, and as a true Texan, he proudly cheered for the Dallas Cowboys. Gabriel's meticulous nature extended to his surroundings, as he was known for his cleanliness and an unmatched attention to detail. His protective nature was evident in his relationship with his sister and his devotion to his Catholic faith, with a special fondness for St. Jude.

Gabriel's love for life was manifested through his culinary talents. A master of the kitchen, he delighted in preparing mouthwatering steaks and spicy fajitas. His sweet tooth was undeniable, finding solace in Oreos, Zebra Cakes, drumsticks, and all things chocolate.

Gabriel G. Sotelo joins in heaven his parents Florencio and Francis Sotelo, and his brother Florencio Sotelo, Jr. He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and skill that will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Rebecca; their children, Gabriel Jr. and his wife, Paula; Leonard and his wife, Rafaela; Michael and his wife, Raquel; Priscilla; and Abel; as well as his cherished grandchildren: Megan, Amanda, Sarah, Matthew, Amber, Leonard, Jacob, Samantha, Michael, Emily, Brittany, Joshua, Hailey; and great-grandchildren: Kash and Honey.

As we say goodbye to Gabriel, let us remember his warm smile, his unwavering dedication to family, and the love he shared with all. The sudden loss of his presence leaves an irreplaceable void, but his spirit will continue to guide and inspire us as we carry his memory forward.

"Perhaps they are not stars in the sky, but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy." - Eskimo Proverb
