Joe Douglas Sutherland

Joe Douglas Sutherland was born on June 16, 1942 to Russell Charles Sutherland and Mabel Lee Provorse in Kilgore, Texas. Joe never was a fan of his middle name "Douglas"  so he always went by Joe "D" Sutherland.

Joe went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 10, 2021 in Rowlett, Texas.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Mae Sutherland, his youngest son, Jason Sutherland, his father, Russell Charles Sutherland, his mother, Mabel Lee Provorse, and his three sisters, Margaret Fry, Marie Grandstaff and Francis McCleod.

Joe is survived by his oldest son, Todd Sutherland, and his wife, Teresa, and their two daughters, Chloe and Hannah, and his daughter, Penny Matthews and her husband, Jay and their two sons, Eric and Stewart. 

Joe was born in Kilgore, Texas and spent his childhood and young adulthood in Kilgore. Joe attended Kilgore Junior College and played trumpet in the Ranger Marching Band.  Joe and Lena were married December 22,1962. After falling in love with Dallas on their honeymoon, Joe and Lena moved there and raised their three children. Joe was a Research Machinist for Texas Instruments for over 33 years. Joe specialized in the building of guidance systems for missiles used by the US military. After retiring, Joe lived the rest of his life surrounded by his loving family, friends and neighbors in Dallas.  

Joe adored his four grandchildren--Eric, Hannah, Stewart and Chloe.  Joe was devoted to his state, his country and grew to love watching and cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys.  In his spare time, Joe loved to bargain shop and on any given day, could be found in his backyard tool shop.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Hughes Family Tribute Center, 9700 Webb Chapel Road, Dallas, TX 75220.  Joe will be laid to rest in the Garden of Trinity at Restland Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75238.

Our family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life at Galloway Avenue Baptist Church, 1930 N. Galloway Avenue, Mesquite, TX 75159 at 2:00 PM on June 26th, 2021.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America at https://alzfdn.org/support-us/donate.
