Linda Lou "Lin" Maute (née Williams), age 82, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2025 while bravely battling multiple health issues, in Richardson, Texas, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on January 27, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio, Lin grew up during the difficult years of World War II. These early challenges shaped her into a resilient and resourceful woman-traits that would define her life and legacy. She learned to stretch every penny and face adversity head-on, becoming a fierce protector of her family and a steadfast presence in the lives of those she loved.
Lin's professional journey was marked by dedication and excellence. She served as the Administrator of the Engineering Department Dean's Office at the University of Texas at Dallas, where she worked until her retirement in 2013. Her career also included roles at prominent companies such as Arco/Exxon/Mobil and Nortel, where she brought her characteristic diligence and leadership to every task. Lin also lived in Dhahran Saudi Arabia when her husband Dr. Robert E. Maute worked with Aramco. Lin made many life-long friends there and made the best of living so far away from America and her family. She worked hard to continue practicing her Mormon/Christian religion whenever possible (as it was very controlled and limited by Saudi law to do so).
A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Lin embraced her faith with deep conviction. She held numerous callings at both ward and stake levels throughout her life. Among these were Sunday School Teacher, Relief Society President, Dallas Stake Missionary, and temple worker. Her spiritual journey took her to sacred places such as Nauvoo and Salt Lake City, and she cherished attending Education Weeks at BYU. Her service within the church was not just a duty but a joy-an expression of her profound commitment to faith and community.
Family was the heart of Lin's world. She was the proud mother of four children: daughter Tammy Taylor Womack; son Robert Taylor (Faith); daughter Alison Maute Steele (Patrick); and Christopher Maute (Lia). Her love extended to her nine grandchildren-Jennifer Milks Myers, Derek Zimmerman, Robby Taylor, Emma Steele, Olivia Steele, Zachary Steele, Kai Steele, Tyler Maute and Isabel Maute -and three great-grandchildren. Lin was the matriarch of her family in every sense: organizing reunions, nurturing connections across generations, and always putting family first.
She is preceded in death by her parents Ed Williams and Bill and Ruth Preston, as well as her younger sister Ida Williams Goodman. Their memories remained close to Lin's heart throughout her life.
Lin's passions were many. She loved to travel-exploring destinations across the globe (she even got dental work in England!)-but always held a special place in her heart for her home state of Ohio, especially during the vibrant fall season. A loyal football fan, Lin cheered enthusiastically for the Dallas Cowboys but reserved her deepest loyalty for Ohio State University football. Her enthusiasm for the game was matched only by her joy in sharing it with those around her.
In recent years, Lin faced numerous health challenges with unwavering courage. Even in retirement, she demonstrated remarkable strength and determination. After a brief illness that led to hospitalization on May 12th, she passed away the following day with family by her side.
Linda Lou "Lin" Maute will be remembered for her fierce love of family, enduring faith, tenacious spirit, and boundless generosity. Her legacy lives on through those she nurtured and inspired.
