Lt. Col. Noel Roberts King (Ret) passed away peacefully on August 20, 2024, in Dallas, Texas, just three days shy of his 91st birthday. Born in DeNova, Colorado, on August 23, 1933, Noel lived a life marked by dedication, curiosity, adventure, humor, a profound love for family, and a friend to all.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Noel served for 20 years. He had a great passion for flying, beginning with his first plane as a teen and chartering flights soon after he obtained his pilot's license. He flew a variety of aircraft during his career, he served in Vietnam, and he last flew the C-5 while based at Travis A.F.B., California. His commitment to his country and his bravery were matched only by his love for the skies.
Then Noel met Tommie and life as he knew it was over. Despite his persistent courtship, Tommie continued to turn him down until she finished her degree at Mary Hardin-Baylor. She then wrote to him and communications ensued between Eielson A.F.B. and Belton, Tx., followed by a tiny box she picked up at the post office. They married on July 13, 1957, and their honeymoon was a road trip to their first home in Alaska, and the beginning of 67 years together.
Noel and Tommie were blessed with three children, who treasure their memories of a devoted father. They embraced life with enthusiasm, and supported family interests in fishing, skiing, traveling to national parks, camping, world-wide travel, and all hobbies. After retiring from the Air Force, Noel and Tommie farmed near San Angelo for 31 years. After their second retirement, they shared many adventures exploring the U.S. and Canada in their RV.
Noel is survived by his beloved wife, Tommie King, children, Betsy King and Darwin King, daughter-in-law, Rhonda King, sister, Alice Didamo, and grandchildren, Brandon Rushing, Kelly King, Renee Rushing, Kyle King, Candace Carey, Kayla King, and Braden King. He also leaves behind ten and a half great-grandchildren, whose lives he touched with his warmth and kindness.
He is predeceased by his parents, Carl and Pearl (Roberts) King, son, Gaillard King, and brothers, Alvin King and Frank King.
Noel's legacy is one of honor, dedication, and deep familial love. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his light, humorous, and helpful spirit will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
As a supporter of The West Texas Boys Ranch, Noel's family would appreciate memorial gifts sent to wtbr.org.
