Marvin Zane Walker: A Legacy of Honor, Love, and Adventure
Marvin Zane Walker, known as Zane throughout his life, a devoted husband, father, and hero, passed away on September 2, 2024, leaving behind a rich legacy of service, love, and cherished memories. Born on February 14, 1936, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, Zane was the beloved son of Lawrence and Ruby Walker. He grew up in a warm, Christian home alongside his five siblings, enjoying a childhood marked by love and faith.
Zane's dreams of soaring through the skies led him to join the U.S. Air Force after leaving College early from Texas Western, a decision that would shape the course of his life. While undergoing navigation training in Sacramento in 1958, Zane met the love of his life, Phyllis Goldberg, who was still in high school at the time. Their hearts connected instantly, and Phyllis fondly remembered him as a true gentleman. Their love culminated in marriage at the Dallas Naval Air Station in 1961.
Zane's career in the Air Force took him to many places, including, Fort Collins, where he completed his Math/Science degree, Ohio and Montana, where they welcomed their son, Robert Walker. Despite frequent re-locations during his Air Force career, Zane's commitment to his family was unwavering. His actions, rather than words, demonstrated his deep love and support for Robert. Zane's military career was distinguished by his service in Vietnam, Thailand, and Guam, where he flew the B-52 Bomber and AC-119k Stinger gunship, logging 5,000 hours, including 2,000 combat hours. His bravery and dedication earned him the rank of Major and numerous accolades, including the Air Force Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses.
Upon retiring from the Air Force, Zane and Phyllis settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they enjoyed the proximity to the mountains and raised their son. Zane became a valuable member of the local utility company and continued to embrace his love for the outdoors, often camping and hiking with Robert. One of their most memorable adventures was hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
A lifelong learner and enthusiast, Zane was an avid reader, delving into everything from fiction to history, and never missed a newspaper. His musical talents were remarkable; he played the piano beautifully, learning pieces by ear despite not reading music. Zane was also a passionate Dallas Cowboys fan and a supporter of the University of New Mexico Lobos, where Robert attended college. His love for good Mexican food and Blue Bell French Vanilla Ice Cream was well-known among family and friends.
Zane is reunited in heaven with his parents, Lawrence and Ruby Walker, and his siblings Doris Bullock, Lawrence Walker, Velma Coleman, and Marilyn Walker. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Phyllis Walker; his son Robert Walker and his wife Robin; grandchildren Lindsay Renshaw, Bethany Kindred, Drew Presley, and Jyllian Walker; and great-grandchildren Devynne Beene, Nolan Kelsey, Owen Walker, Presley Kindred, Charlotte Kelsey, Hudson Kindred, and Willow Renshaw. He is also survived by his sister, June Hollenshead.
Zane Walker's life was a testament to courage, love, and unwavering dedication. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for the profound impact he had on those who knew him. His legacy will continue to inspire, and his memory will forever be cherished by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
