Beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother Phoolan Talwar was born in 1931 in Jhang Maghiana, a small town near Lahore, India (now Pakistan). Phool, as she is fondly called, is 'Flower' in Hindi and she was just that in her family of 4 older brothers and mother who adored her, in the absence of their dear father whom they lost at an early age.
Her childhood was a happy one in Pre-Partition India playing and going to school with her cousins as part of a joint family. Unfortunately, this was not to last as their world would soon be torn apart at the tender age of 15, when India was partitioned into India and Pakistan. She and her family lost everything. Witnessing all the horrors of war and terror, they escaped to India with just the clothes on their backs and finally landing in a refugee camp.
With strength, fortitude and a sheer will to survive, Phool built her life back again with her family and soon thereafter with her husband Kailash Talwar also a refugee, at the young age of 20. They were betrothed by their parents at age 6! Their hard work and sacrifice bore fruit as Kailash became a career diplomat taking them all over the world. Phool with a 5th grade education taught herself to read and speak English, and was the picture of elegance, intelligence, and graciousness as she conversed with and assisted in hosting dignitaries in 7+ countries. Every person who met her was struck not only by her beauty, but also her ability to have a conversation with anyone no matter what their age, background, or nationality.
Phool is survived by her 3 sons and daughters in law - Rakesh and Babli Talwar, Dinesh and Sushma Talwar, Rajeev and Nisha Talwar, and her daughter and son-in-law Anjala and Mahesh Tharoor. She was blessed to have 9 loving grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She lived her last 35+ years with her daughter and family where she raised and provided loving guidance to her grandchildren Rohan and Rahul. She became the true matriarch of the extended Talwar family around the world! Her leadership, strength, patience, and sheer will power is the biggest gift to us all. May she forever rest in peace as she says goodbye to a life well lived of 92 years.
