Robert H. Santillan, Jr. September 16, 1957 – April 9, 2025
With deep sorrow and loving remembrance, we share the passing of Robert H. Santillan, Jr., affectionately known to his friends and family as “Tio” and “Bobby,” who left this world on April 9, 2025, in Dallas, Texas. He was born there on September 16, 1957, to Sarah Barron Santillan and Robert H. Santillan, Sr., and remained forever proud of his roots and the city that shaped him.
Robert lived a life rich with purpose, laughter, curiosity, and heart. A graduate of North Dallas High School, he was never content with surface-level knowledge. He was a lifelong learner in the truest sense. Driven by a thirst for understanding, Robert earned several bachelor's and master’s degrees from the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of North Texas. His fields of study included Geology, Business Finance, and Information Technology, each one reflecting his love for learning and his fascination with the world.
He wasn’t just intelligent, he was wise. The kind of person you could sit with for hours, talking about everything from ancient fossils to startup economics to the mysteries of the universe. He was the family encyclopedia, the person who always had a thoughtful answer, a surprising fact, or an open mind. He was a student of both science and spirit.
Outside the classroom, Robert’s joy radiated through nature. He was most at peace surrounded by trees, rivers, and open skies. Camping and fishing were more than hobbies. They were how he connected to the earth, how he found silence, and how he created lasting memories with those he loved. His favorite places were Texas State Parks, especially Dinosaur Valley, where he delighted in taking his nieces and nephews on fossil hunts and teaching them about prehistoric life with the excitement of a true adventurer.
Robert was also a passionate gardener, known especially for growing vegetables and an impressive array of peppers. He took great pride in crafting homemade salsa so spicy they were considered a rite of passage by anyone brave enough to try them. His gardening was a reflection of his nurturing spirit. He loved watching things grow and flourish under his care, whether it was a pepper plant or a person.
But perhaps Robert’s greatest gift was how he expressed love through food. He was a phenomenal cook, especially when it came to Italian cuisine, and he was happiest in the kitchen surrounded by family. He never served himself until everyone else had a full plate, and he always made enough for seconds and thirds. Cooking was his love language, and meals at home were more than nourishment. They were events, filled with laughter, stories, and the kind of comfort only he could provide.
The holidays brought out the childlike wonder in Robert. He was legendary for his Halloween antics, including the year he bought a full-size coffin just to jump out and surprise trick-or-treaters. At Christmas, he and his life partner, Victoria, dressed up as Santa and his elf, handing out gifts with joy and generosity. Robert always kept a few extra presents on hand just in case a child came who wasn’t expecting one. That was the kind of person he was. Always thinking of others. Always planning ahead to make someone feel special.
Robert was also a devoted son. He cared for his mother and lived with her until her passing just last year. Their bond was deep and unwavering, and he honored her through his patience, his presence, and his unshakable love. That care he showed his mother was the same care he extended to everyone lucky enough to be part of his life.
A true rocker at heart, Robert filled his home with the sounds of AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, and KISS. He also had a deeply spiritual side, with a lifelong fascination with world religions and mystical traditions. He read about different faiths, explored metaphysical teachings, and gave eerily accurate tarot readings to family and friends. He was the family mystic, always reminding us that the world is bigger, stranger, and more magical than we realize.
He also loved sharing his favorite stories and fandoms, especially Star Wars. He made sure every niece and nephew knew their Jedi from their Sith.
Robert’s legacy is one of generosity, humor, intellect, and deep connection. He was the glue in his family. The uncle who made everyone laugh, the father who his son could depend on, the brother who always showed up, the partner who created magic during the holidays, the friend who answered the call. His presence lit up every room, and his love was the kind that left a mark on your soul.
He is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Sarah Barron Santillan, and his father, Robert H. Santillan, Sr.; and his grandparents.
He is survived by his son, Robert H. Santillan, III; his life partner, Victoria; his God daughter, Jozzelyn Santillan; his siblings, Samuel Rene Santillan, Charles Troy Santillan, Dean Matthew Santillan, and Yolanda Yvonne Santillan; his nieces, Shelly Santillan and Jackie Lopez; his great niece, Dalilah Manzanero; his extended family of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and the countless lives he touched with his warmth, wit, and wisdom.
Robert taught us how to live fully, learn endlessly, and love without limits. His absence is profound, but his spirit will never fade. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Arbor Day Foundation in Robert’s memory.
