Life Story

Soledad Rios, affectionately known as "Mama Chole," was born on March 15, 1929, in Durango, Mexico. On August 18, 2023, she peacefully passed away, surrounded by her loving family. Mama Chole was the heart and soul of her family, a beacon of warmth and love that radiated through the generations.

Mama Chole's life was a testament to her unwavering love and devotion. Born into a loving family, she faced the loss of her mother, Alenjandrina Vasquez, at a young age. Despite this heartache, Mama Chole embraced the role of a caretaker early on, raising her younger sister, Sororro Ibarra, with the same love and dedication that would come to define her life. She was her beloved daughter in every way.

As a dedicated homemaker, she poured her love into every aspect of her family's life. She had an undeniable gift for nurturing, and her presence was a source of comfort and strength for everyone fortunate enough to know her. But Mama Chole's heart was so expansive that it extended beyond her immediate family. She then welcomed another daughter Elva Martinez, whom she loved beyond words.

One of Mama Chole's greatest passions was gardening, and her hands had the magical touch to make bright pink flowers flourish under her care. Her garden was a reflection of her love for life's beauty and her ability to nurture growth in all things.

In the kitchen, Mama Chole's talents were legendary. Her cooking, especially her Guiso and Tamales, were delights that brought joy to countless family gatherings. Her culinary creations were not just nourishment for the body but expressions of her love and care for those she cherished.

Mama Chole's devout Catholic faith was an integral part of her life. She prayed the Rosary with unwavering devotion, finding solace and strength in her connection to her faith. Every May 13th, she embarked on a pilgrimage to the Fatima church in El
Pino, Durango, a tradition she upheld in honor of her mother, who rests within the church's hallowed walls.

During the holiday season, Mama Chole's spirit shone brightly as she lovingly arranged her cherished nativity scene. This yearly tradition illuminated her home with the joy and wonder of Christmas.

Mama Chole had a sweet tooth that mirrored her sweet nature. Her love for all things chocolate was matched only by her appreciation for the finer things in life, like good chicharrones and delectable chicken wings. Her palate was as diverse as her heart was large.

Soledad Rios leaves behind a legacy of love that will forever be cherished by her children, Socorro Ibarra and her husband Rafael and Elva Martinez; her grandchildren Maria Marroquin, Aurelio Ibarra, Luis Martinez, Lorena Peña, Willifred Martinez, Jesus Martinez, Gerardo Martinez, and Lizette Martinez; and 13 great-grandchildren. She joins her parents Emilio Hernandez and Alenjandrina Vasquez in Heaven.

Mama Chole's memory will live on in the hearts of her family, an eternal reminder of the love, warmth, and devotion that she shared so generously. As they mourn her passing, they will also celebrate the beautiful life she led and the profound impact she had on all who were blessed to know her.

Rest in peace, dear Mama Chole. Your love will forever be our guiding light.
