Vijay Garg

Vijay Kumar Garg, Ph.D., 85 years old, passed away on July 13, 2025 in Dallas, Texas after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Dr. Vijay Garg was born in Moradabad, India on November 18, 1939.  He completed his B.S. in Electrical Engineering at India Institute of Technology (IT) in Roorkee, India in 1962. After which, he started as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Birla Institute of Technology in Ranchi, India. While teaching, he completed a M.S. in Electrical Engineering at Ranchi University (India) in 1970. He then immigrated to the United States and completed a M.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1972 and then a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1975, both at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (i.e., Virginia Tech). After graduation, he returned to teaching and served as an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Portland State University. In 1978, he moved to industry where he brought his expertise in electrical engineering to Allis Chalmers, Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Mentor Graphics, Ford Motor Company and Caterpillar, from which he retired in 2010. During this time, he maintained adjunct faculty appointments at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Carnegie Mellon University and University of Detroit. Over this time, Dr. Vijay Garg distinguished himself as an accomplished scholar and teacher being elected an IEEE Fellow (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and co-authoring over 100 technical papers and research reports and holding over 20 US patent awards. His greatest happiness came from his children and grandchildren, both in providing them guidance and in celebrating their successes.

Over these 35 years, Dr. Garg lived and worked in multiple cities across the United States including Beaverton and Lake Oswego, Oregon; Waukesha, Wisconsin; Murrysville, Pennsylvania;
Canton, Michigan; and Peoria, Illinois. He initially retired in Dublin, Ohio before moving to the warmer climate of Dallas, Texas in 2017.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kailash Chandra and Vishan Devi Garg, and his two brothers, Pramod Kumar Garg and Ashok Kumar Garg. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Aruna Garg; 2 children Richa Bhattacharya and Dr. Vidu Garg and wife Ami; 4 grandchildren Sarina and Sonia Bhattacharya and Maya and Vinay Garg; 5 sisters Madhu Gupta, Ranjana Bansal, Neeru Gupta, Manju Goel, Shashi Gupta; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Dr. Vijay Garg will be held on July 17, 2025 at 9:00 am at Hughes Family Tribute Center 9700 Webb Chapel Road in Dallas, Texas, 75220 (Phone: 214-350-9951).
