William “Bill” Kassen, age 88, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 25th, 2023. He was born October 22nd, 1934 on a ranch in Norborne, Missouri, as the 6th of 7 children to Frank and Verna Kassen. On April 15, 1961, Bill married the love of his life, Patricia “Darlene” Kassen.
Bill was an incredibly hard-working person, dedicated to his career, while never losing sight of what mattered most to him, his faith and his family. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1961. He then graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1959, Bill started his first job working for Arthur Young & Co. in Tulsa, OK, where he met his loving wife of 59 years. Shortly after Bill and Darlene married in 1961, they moved to Champaign, IL where he earned an MBA from the University of Illinois. Bill then accepted a job in Dallas, TX, where they would spend the next 30 years raising their five children.
In 1966, Bill took a job with Dixico, Inc, where he spent 17 years of his career and eventually became President & CEO. After leaving Dixico, Bill continued to work in the flexible packaging industry, owning his own company and eventually ending his professional career in Memphis, TN. In 1996, they moved back to Dallas, where they enjoyed a new chapter of their life focusing on volunteering, traveling, and enjoying time with family, especially their beloved grandchildren.
Known as Bill to most, Papa to some, and Dad to an extremely lucky few. Bill was a businessman, a family man, and everything in between. He was extremely dedicated to his family and cared for the needs of each and every one of them. Whether it was attending games on weekends or packing up the family van for an adventurous vacation across the country, Bill always put his family first.
As their kids began to start families of their own, Bill and Darlene became loving grandparents, showing every bit of love and care for their grandchildren that they showed to their own kids. Bill was a proud Papa, and treasured every moment he was able to spend with his grandkids, whether in person or through FaceTime.
Bill had a deep love for the Lord and that was shown through his love for his family and the love for others around him. Bill was known for a giving heart; he volunteered at SCORE as a business professional mentor. He was an active member of the St. Monica Catholic Church family, serving as a Eucharistic minister and volunteering at North Dallas Shared Ministries. Bill also drove many miles over the years for the Bread Ministries, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
Bill enjoyed life to the fullest. He and Darlene enjoyed traveling to Yellowstone, visiting relatives, bird watching, and numerous trips to the casinos. Bill was also an avid golfer and played well into his 80’s always searching for his hole-in-one. He was a voracious reader and was never found without a book by his side. He also kept his mind sharp by doing the daily crossword and Wordl!
He was looked up to by all, inside and outside of his home. Bill cared for every person that he came across whether he knew them or not and constantly put others before himself.
He was a role model to all, and his life will be celebrated for all the incredible memories that he gave us.
Bill is survived by his five children; Julie Kassen (Darrell Zimmerman), Steve (Kate) Kassen, Joe (Karen) Kassen, Jan Kassen, David (Susan) Kassen; 7 grandchildren, Will Kassen, Katharyn Kassen, Jameson Kassen, Hays Kassen, Wynn Kassen, Cole Kassen, Kyle Kassen; his sister Charlotte Lock; his brother-in-law Bob (Nancy) Riehl; his many nieces and nephews, and his loved ones in France.
